You must have heard the term ‘Career and Technical Education’ at some point of your life in anyone of your conversations with a friend, teacher or even family members. Were you able to understand what it means immediately or you spent a few minutes to know? Mostly people do not know what exactly is Career and Technical education and therefore, have some really disturbing concepts about it. It is not their fault after all, because the topic has not been talked about enough and people are unaware about it through and through.

What we know about Career and Technical Education in high school

Due to this very reason, today we decided to discuss the topic in detail in this blog post. It will help the people to understand the direction of the education world much easily and deeply. Not just that, but it will also help the children to know the field in detail and then to decide for themselves whether they want to pursue their career in this area or the conventional areas just like all their fellow students.

In the United States of America, career and technical education has played a crucial role for students in their secondary school life. In 1971, US federal government passed the law to provide proper funds for vocational education. At that time, even education had not been compulsory in all the states.

The sector of CTE consists of a huge variety of activities which prepare the students for technical skills in the job market as well as the technical information which is required in the field and after secondary degrees. The activities of CTE are not only limited to career related classes, but also multiple internships, apprenticeships and in-school programs to teach the labor market better to students.

Through career and technical education programs, students are able to learn career-oriented goals specifically. Students, who do not go to college, can easily get trained for the professional world through CTE and then directly land an attractive job, right after graduation. There are multiple experiences like that of internships, and professional working environments which practically teach the students soft skills that could be useful and sometimes necessary in the job market. When the students are able to implement their academic learning into the practical and professional world, they are more easily motivated to attend classes and go to the school. Furthermore, it also encourages the students to get engaged in the classroom and interact with their academic skills which improve their learning and academics.

However, CTE has been facing a major decline from the past many years and that is why a lot of people are clearly unaware about it. In around 1980, government started declining the funds for CTE and also increased the required number of courses to graduate high school. Furthermore, it was also mandatory for the students to take additional courses of core academics like math, science, foreign language, and social studies etc. Along with these two constraints, the society also started thinking that young students should be pushed to get the proper degrees from educational institutes which continue for four years and this perception prominently affected the participation in CTE by students. By the year 2009, the high school students’ credits in CTE had dropped down to 14 percent only.
However, in the last decade CTE is again on rise and there are multiple internships and demand in labor market. According to several researches, the students involved in the CTE programs have much high employment rate and similarly they are earning much better than their peers as well. However, the study also showed that the students who have more number of credits of CTE in their college have lower academic performance, and assignmentace ratio is quite low when compared to the students who are enrolled in colleges for a usual 4 years degree program. Similarly, the performance is not much different when tested amongst the comparison groups.

In the end, according to the cheap assignment writing UK research the students of CTE are less likely to enroll themselves in colleges and universities, but it does not make them unemployed or poorly employed. In fact, the career and technical education students are better employed than their peers in the conventional system of education due to the difference in teaching style. Since CTE promotes practical learning and keeps the students engaged throughout the coursework, they are better skilled and can easily overshadow their friends from the conventional degree. This proves that CTE is quite a good field and is not given enough attention by the people in authority which has made it neglected and less accessible by the students. It is important that schools and governments start paying attention to this particular field and also create awareness among the regular people so that the students and their parents are able to choose it if they want.
